The Others: Pestilence

Here is the last of the three I did for the expansion, Pestilence. Not much to say about this guy as he was pretty straight forward for me to do. Hope it does Mr. Smiths art justice.

The Others: Death

Death was the second of the Four Horseman I got to do and I was dreading it, it's those wings. Feathers. Not a strong point of mine. When doing big figures like this the limbs can end up being like sculpting an entire figure in itself and the wings were pretty involved for me. Mostly because the art depicts them as moldering and sickly and I found out that to get that drooping and filthy look I was pushing dangerously close into hair technique territory and I began to worry that it was looking more like he had hairy wings rather then feathered. Hopefully he looks good to you all. And hey, look! It's those skulls again!

The Others: War

I got to be involved with the expansion for this game and got to do three of the main big monsters for this project. The first was War and here are the pics of the original. The ammo belts ended up being pulled tight into the body to help with casting and the gun gauntlet had to have a lot of back-fill under the barrels and turned into a separate part to help with the molding process. No back detail had been given so as per norm I got to add my own touch to the figure, I included an ominous cylinder sprouting from between his shoulder blades that has a radioactive insignia on it. I kind of figured War to be nuclear capable.
I'm including Adrian's art so you can see how well or poorly I kept to the art, hope you enjoy.

Blood Rage: Fenrir

Whooo! The last days of the Blood rage kickstarter I got contacted to do Fenrir, how awesome! I mean, I got to sculpt the beast that eats gods, how cool is that?
I added some stuff of my own to the base to try and add a bit of grandeur and capture some of the backgrounf in Mr. Smith's artwork, I had Fenrir perched upon a toppled odalisque that had the Valknut symbol on it. My cursory investigation made this seem like an ominous object to have fallen since the sign is associated with both fallen warriors and Odin himself. I also added the arm of slain warrior sticking out from underneath the stone maybe hinting at it falling on someone.
I had some problems with the chain Gleipnir as in mythology it was supposed to be amazingly thin yet unbreakable. Unfortunately a detail that small might get lost in the casting process. I tried sculpting smaller links but the detail began to blur with the fur and ended up looking more like creases in the skin rather then a foreign object so I ended up opting for larger links that would show up more on the figure. Sorry.

Blood Rage: Sea Serpent

I think this was the third monster I did for Blood Rage and upon seeing the art it was my first big clue that this was not a scale driven game, rather a something more like Risk then a wargame. The trick with this guy was all the tendrils waving around his head. These figures were to be as few parts possible to cut down on production cost (and cost of the game for customer) as well as assembling the figure afterwards so I had to do my best on-the-fly engineering to make it look as dynamic as the art yet have as few parts to produce.

Blood Rage: Mountain Giant

Now this, THIS is the guy I've been wanting to show off! I did this figure in 10 days, (which is fast BTW) and I did something I should never ever do; I sculpted it without taking progress pictures for Mike McVey to critique. Normally I take photos of the figure during various stages to 1: show that I am working on the project and making progress, and 2: the art directors can point things out they want changed before it gets too far along in the sculpt to become a problem. But I was under a tight deadline for this guy since I had him as well as the Mystic Troll to do and I just sorta... Spaced out for a while sculpting him. Before I knew it I had him done. Luckily Mike was OK with how it turned out and I got him overseas in time for the Kickstarter campaign.
I changed his pose a bit, (Sorry Mr. Smith!)  and did kind of the reverse for the Frost Giant; instead of being perched on a scenic base of a cliff face I had him descending down the scenic addition. I had Jane's Addiction: Coming Down the Mountain stuck in my head for a few days. I'm not sure what inspired the pose, I think it may be a subliminal memory of a scene from and old 80's fantasy movie, Sword and the Sorcerer maybe? Anyway, I was happy with how it turned out especially since I don't do fur that often and I attempted to do it in the same style as the other figures in the line for aesthetic continuity. Oh yeah, he's big too! Those are the same resin skulls I made that I've used throughout this line, Mike didn't give me a size he wanted the figure to be so by looking at the skulls in the art and with the name "Mountain Giant" I just sorta went from there. Hope you guys like it!
