Monsterpocalypse was my big project for a while, I was under contract with Privateer for a year to complete the project and during that time I sculpted all the monsters and some of the bases for the Empire of the Apes, Lords of Cthul, Planet Eaters, Savage Swarm, Terrasaurs and the Tritons with the exception of the vehicles. I think it was sometime early in '08 I got sent the concept art for Terra Kahn as a test piece and right after finishing him up the concept art started flooding in. This was an amazingly stressful and busy time as I was cranking out something like 6 sculpts a month on the average and some of the designs were requiring details that I wasn't sure how I was going to pull it off. I even had to build special tools for some figures like Anglax to get that fish scale effect and once the fig was done I haven't used that tool since.
While I don't feel these guys are my best as I was so rushed it was a crazy trial by fire in creative problem solving which got me thinking it different directions. I had actually done so many figures and their releases had been so drawn out that I had forgotten what I had sculpted, I would see a picture online or down at the game shop and recognize a figure I barely have any recollection of working on. I was pretty surprised to find out that Monpoc is getting optioned for a movie, if I find it surreal seeing product that I have worked on at a game shop I can only imagine what it's going to be like seeing these monsters I worked on stomping around on the big screen.
The pics I chose to show for this are of the last three I did and to my knowledge these have yet to be released to the public. Also, I don't normally post pics of my "greens" so I thought I would do something different.

  1. I would love to see any other pics you have of these. I am a HUGE Monsterpocalypse fan and was absolutely gutted that these never made it to wide release.

    1. Sorry, I don't think I ever got a chance to take any. There was a pretty break-neck pace set to get these done and it ended up being quicker to just send the figures up to Seattle so they could see them in person and then send it back to me with corrections.
But I do still have the original Terrasaur - Spikasaur model that was too big to use and I had to resculpt it. That one is 16mm to it's top and about 15mm long, he sits in a drawer with other failed sculpts like the first two Skorn Extreme Titans.

  2. That's too bad. Monsterpocalypse was my favourite game of all time, and these sculpts which they teased a few pics of are like torture! What can you tell me about the other sculpts? What was the last big elemental monster like? What about the mole? Did you do more buildings?

    1. 'm not sure what to say about the other sculpts, I was not an in-hose sculptor at the time so I never got to see any of the other work in production. The only ones that I did that did not go into production were the three posted here. I didn't work on the mole so no inside info there and if I did a building then it's in the list.
The only other things I can show you is a sculpt I did on my own but was never picked up by PP since Monpoc was ending...

And a sketch I did for a proposed Monpoc army called the Privateers, it's the last picture in the post...

  3. I just ran across these, and I'm curious if you still have any of the Monsterpocalypse sculpts around and if you'd be open for commission on a fanmade model.

    1. All the sculpts are in the hands of Privateer Press, I think I have one sculpt for a Spikeasaur(?) that ended up being too small to use and I needed to redo it but I'm not sure where it is though.
This blog is about as close to social media as I get but If you like you can drop another post here with your email, I'll see it before it's posted and respond without showing off your personal info and we can talk about it.
